Jen’s Journey – Learning to Walk Again After a Spinal Tumour
Jen was initially assessed by CN Rehab in September 2023 and is still undergoing treatment.
Rebuilding Strength, Step by Step with Our Neurorehabilitation Team
At CN Rehab, every client’s story matters. Jen’s journey through recovery after a spinal tumour is one of determination, expert care, and perseverance. This is not just a case study; it’s a testament to what skilled neurorehabilitation and physiotherapy can achieve when delivered with compassion and commitment.
A Life-Altering Diagnosis
Jen was diagnosed with a spinal tumour, which led to significant loss of movement and function in her lower limbs. The tumour impacted her spinal cord, making walking and many day-to-day activities nearly impossible. After her medical treatment and surgery, Jen was left facing a long road to recovery. But she wasn’t ready to give up.
That’s when she found our neuro-rehabilitation clinic in the UK.
Finding the Right Neurorehab Clinic
Jen and her family were looking for a neurorehab clinic that offered more than just standard rehabilitation. They needed a team that understood the complexity of spinal cord injuries and could offer a personalised, evidence-based approach to spinal tumour physiotherapy.
CN Rehab specialises in neuro-rehabilitation services and physiotherapy, supporting individuals with spinal tumor recovery, stroke recovery, brain injury rehabilitation and many neurological conditions. From the moment Jen joined us, we worked closely with her to design a programme that supported her goals, abilities, and progress.
Rebuilding Step by Step
Jen’s spinal tumour recovery programme was tailored to her unique needs. It included:
- Targeted lower limb strength and coordination training
- Gait retraining using manual guidance and specialist rehab equipment. Find out more about our gait training equipment, the Lexo Gait Trainer.
- Task-specific functional movement therapy
- Balance and proprioception exercises to reduce fall risk
Omega Device & Lexo Gait Training
Her treatment has incorporated innovative techniques, including crawling and four-point kneeling, foundational movements that toddlers use when learning to walk, and equally powerful for adults relearning those same patterns. These methods, picked up by our team during their training in the US, focus on retraining the body from the ground up. As the saying goes: toddlers crawl before they walk, and it’s no different when relearning to walk after neurological trauma.
Jen also worked extensively with the Omega device and the Lexo Gait Trainer, combining robotic support with functional movement to gradually rebuild confidence and coordination in walking.
Sessions were intensive, structured, and constantly adapted to match Jen’s improvements and challenges. A dedicated PE teacher, Jen brought her natural drive, motivation, and work ethic to every session — a quality that truly inspired our team.
Progress was gradual and hard-earned. There were days when fatigue, discomfort, or frustration made things difficult. But through it all, Jen showed immense courage and a relentless work ethic. And our team was with her every step of the way.
The Breakthroughs
Milestones in neurorehabilitation are deeply personal. For Jen, each small win added up to something incredible:
- Regaining the ability to stand with support
- Relearning how to walk with confidence and coordination
- Reclaiming aspects of daily life that once felt out of reach
Behind every breakthrough was a combination of Jen’s determination, something that was heart-warming for our team to be a part of.
Jen is now walking independently with a zimmer frame and continuing to improve her mobility and independence every day. Her story inspires our whole team and reminds us of the incredible potential within every individual we support.
Well done, Jen - you are truly an inspiration to us all!
