Head Injury

What is a Head Injury?

Head injury – sometimes called brain injury, describes an injury to the brain that is sustained through a variety of different means, including; lack of oxygen, stroke, brain tumour or a severe impact. The severity of the injury to the brain can vary greatly depending on the location of the injury and the type of trauma it causes.

Some common physical limitations following a brain injury are as follows:

  • Reduced function in the upper limb/hand
  • Reduced function in the lower limb
  • Reduced Balance and co-ordination
  • Increased tightness in muscles of the affected limbs
  • Changes in levels of fatigue
  • Changes in mood or personality

There are several different types of head injury:

Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired Brain Injury is a term that describes an injury to the brain that is not caused by an external force. Examples include stroke, some types of tumour or damage that is caused when the brain is starved of oxygen, also called a hypoxic brain injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury describes when damage is caused to the brain by an external force or a blow to the head, such as an injury sustained in a road traffic accident.

Stroke

A Stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is temporarily stopped due to a blockage or a blood clot. The lack of oxygen causes brain cells to die, which can result in stiffness and paralysis in the facial muscles, arms and legs. Find out more about stroke recovery.

FAQs

Can you fully recover from a head injury?

Recovery from a head injury depends on multiple factors, including the injury's severity, the area of the brain affected, age, and overall health. Many individuals experience significant improvements with timely and appropriate rehabilitation. However, some may continue to have long-term challenges. Early intervention, consistent therapy, and strong family support play critical roles in achieving the best possible outcome.

What therapies are used in head injury rehabilitation?

Head injury rehabilitation often involves a multidisciplinary approach including physiotherapy to improve mobility, occupational therapy to regain daily living skills, speech and language therapy for communication difficulties, and neuropsychology to address cognitive or emotional changes. Each rehabilitation plan is tailored to the individual's specific impairments and goals to maximise recovery.

How long is rehab after a head injury?

The length of rehabilitation after a head injury can vary greatly depending on the severity of the injury, the areas of the brain affected, and the individual's specific needs. Some people may require only a few weeks of therapy, while others with more severe injuries might need months or even years of ongoing support. Typically, early intensive rehabilitation begins within days or weeks of the injury and may transition into community-based rehabilitation for continued recovery. A personalised assessment by a rehabilitation team can provide a clearer timeline and set realistic goals for each stage of recovery.
