Hydrotherapy

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a specialist form of physiotherapy carried out in a purpose-built, temperature-controlled pool. Using the unique physical properties of water, including buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure, hydrotherapy treatment allows patients to move, exercise and rehabilitate in ways that are simply not possible on land.

Water naturally supports the body, reducing the load placed on joints, muscles and the spine. This makes treatment by hydrotherapy particularly valuable for patients with neurological conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain and reduced weight-bearing capacity. At the same time, water provides gentle resistance that challenges and strengthens the body with every movement, making hydrotherapy treatments both restorative and physically progressive.

At CN Rehab, we offer a first-class hydrotherapy service delivered by specialist physiotherapists in a hydrotherapy pool that is purpose-built for complex rehabilitation needs. Sessions are available on a limited weekly basis, ensuring every patient receives the full attention and clinical focus they deserve.

Who Can Benefit From Hydrotherapy Treatment?

Hydrotherapy is suitable for a wide range of conditions and patient presentations. It is particularly beneficial for those who find land-based exercise difficult, painful or inaccessible due to weakness, spasticity, pain or limited weight-bearing ability.

Conditions that commonly benefit from hydrotherapy treatments include stroke and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, chronic pain conditions, arthritis and joint conditions, post-operative orthopaedic rehabilitation, musculoskeletal injuries, fibromyalgia, Guillain-Barré syndrome and general deconditioning and reduced mobility.

If you are unsure whether hydrotherapy is appropriate for your condition or situation, our team is happy to discuss this with you before booking.

Our Hydrotherapy Pool

Our hydrotherapy pool is one of the finest rehabilitation pools available in the region. Spacious, fully equipped and maintained to the highest clinical standards, it has been designed with the needs of complex rehabilitation patients at its heart.

Constant therapeutic temperature: The water is maintained at a constant temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, warmer than a standard swimming pool, which promotes muscle relaxation, reduces spasticity and creates an environment that is both physically and psychologically comfortable.

Full hoist access: The pool is fitted with both a poolside hoist and a full ceiling track hoist system, ensuring that patients with very limited mobility or no weight-bearing capacity can enter and exit the water safely, comfortably and with dignity.

Lifeguard supervision at all times: A qualified lifeguard is present for every session, providing an additional layer of safety and allowing the treating physiotherapist to focus entirely on your rehabilitation.

Viewing gallery: A dedicated viewing gallery allows family members, carers and support workers to observe the session from poolside without needing to enter the water. For patients with complex needs, having a familiar face nearby can make a meaningful difference to comfort and confidence in the water.

Sensory and Mood Environment

We understand that the therapeutic environment matters as much as the treatment itself, particularly for patients with neurological conditions, sensory sensitivities or anxiety around water.

Our hydrotherapy pool is fitted with adjustable mood and sensory lighting, allowing the atmosphere to be tailored to each patient's needs and preferences. Stimulating images and patterns can also be projected onto the walls of the pool, creating a visually engaging and calming environment.

Music is available throughout every session via speakers built into the pool area. Patients and their families are encouraged to choose whatever they would like to listen to, whether that is pop music, classical, nature sounds or something entirely personal. Getting this right is a small but important part of making each session as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Private Changing Facilities

Privacy and dignity are central to how we have designed our hydrotherapy facilities. The pool area is served by several fully private changing rooms, each of which includes an individual wet room, a changing plinth, a ceiling track hoist and a therapy chair.

Each changing facility connects directly to the poolside, meaning that patients can be prepared and transferred to the water without travelling through shared spaces. After the session, patients can take all the time they need to dry, dress and recover in their own private space without any time pressure or concern about shared facilities.

For patients who require assistance with changing, our staff are experienced in providing support in a way that is respectful, efficient and sensitive to individual preferences.

Neurological Hydrotherapy

For patients with neurological conditions, hydrotherapy treatment offers something that no other form of rehabilitation can fully replicate: the opportunity to move freely.

When the body is immersed in warm water, buoyancy dramatically reduces the effect of gravity on the body. For patients with little or no ability to weight-bear on land, this can open up a range of movements and functional activities that would be impossible to achieve in a standard gym or therapy environment. Joints that are stiff or restricted on land can be moved more freely in water. Muscles weakened by neurological injury or disease can be challenged and strengthened through water resistance at a level that is genuinely therapeutic rather than overwhelming.

Beyond the purely physical benefits, many of our neurological patients describe their time in the hydrotherapy pool as the one part of their rehabilitation where they feel a genuine sense of freedom and independence. For patients who spend much of their time in a wheelchair or relying on support for basic mobility, the experience of moving independently in the water can be profoundly positive, both physically and emotionally.

Hydrotherapy is also highly effective for managing spasticity, reducing pain and improving sleep quality, outcomes that can be as meaningful to daily life as measurable gains in strength or range of movement.

What to Expect From a Hydrotherapy Session at CN Rehab

Every hydrotherapy session at CN Rehab is led by a qualified physiotherapist with specialist experience in aquatic rehabilitation. Additional support staff are present as required, based on the individual needs of each patient.

Sessions are individually planned around your rehabilitation goals, current functional level and any clinical considerations specific to your condition. Your physiotherapist will guide you through exercises and activities in the water, adjusting the programme in real time based on how you are responding.

Before your first session, you will have an opportunity to discuss your goals, any concerns about the water and any medical factors that may be relevant. We will also assess your access and transfer needs so that the session can run as smoothly and comfortably as possible from the outset.

Sessions are available on a limited weekly basis. We recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred time.

Hydrotherapy Near Me: Why Choose CN Rehab?

If you are searching for hydrotherapy near you, it is worth understanding what separates a clinical hydrotherapy service from a general aquatic exercise class. At CN Rehab, every session is led by a physiotherapist with specialist rehabilitation expertise, not a fitness instructor or pool attendant. Your treatment is clinically planned, individually structured and delivered in a facility that has been purpose-built for complex rehabilitation needs.

Our hydrotherapy pool is equipped to a standard rarely seen outside of NHS specialist centres, with ceiling track hoisting, sensory lighting, private changing with full wet room facilities and constant 35-degree water temperature. For patients with complex neurological or physical presentations, this level of equipment and clinical oversight makes a significant difference to what can be achieved.

We serve patients from across the region and welcome enquiries from individuals, families, case managers, solicitors and healthcare professionals looking to arrange specialist hydrotherapy treatment.

FAQs

What conditions are treated with hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy treats neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, including stroke, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and post-surgery recovery. It helps by reducing joint stress, enhancing muscle strength, and improving balance and coordination. The buoyancy and resistance in water support low-impact exercises tailored to each patient, promoting safe, effective rehabilitation while minimising pain and risk of injury.

How many times a week should you do hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy frequency varies by individual needs, but 1-3 sessions per week is commonly recommended for general rehabilitation. Those with severe neurological or physical conditions may benefit from additional sessions. Hydrotherapy's gentle, low-impact environment helps with muscle relaxation, circulation, and mobility.

Who should not do hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is generally beneficial but may not suit everyone. Individuals with infectious skin conditions, severe heart disease, respiratory issues like uncontrolled asthma, fever, acute illness, severe incontinence, or uncontrolled epilepsy should avoid it. These conditions can increase risks or worsen symptoms in a water environment.

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy, or aquatic therapy, uses water to aid rehabilitation, improve mobility, and relieve pain. This low-impact treatment supports recovery for neurological, musculoskeletal, and injury-related conditions. Water’s buoyancy reduces stress on joints, enhancing movement and flexibility, while its resistance strengthens muscles.
