What Is an Ischaemic Stroke?

An ischaemic stroke happens when a blood clot or narrowed artery blocks the blood supply to part of the brain. Without a steady flow of oxygen-rich blood, brain cells in that area are damaged. The effects you experience depend on which part of the brain was affected and for how long.

Ischaemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, making up around 85% of cases in the UK. They generally fall into a few groups:

  • Thrombotic stroke: a clot forms in an artery that supplies the brain, usually where fatty deposits have already narrowed it.
  • Embolic stroke: a clot forms elsewhere in the body, often the heart, and travels to the brain. Atrial fibrillation is a common cause.
  • Lacunar stroke: a small artery deep within the brain becomes blocked. This is often linked to high blood pressure or diabetes.

Symptoms of Ischaemic Stroke

The symptoms of ischaemic stroke come on suddenly. The FAST test is the quickest way to spot them:

  • Face: the face may have dropped on one side, or the person can’t smile evenly.
  • Arms: they may not be able to lift both arms and keep them raised.
  • Speech: their speech may be slurred, or they may struggle to find words or understand you.
  • Time: call 999 straight away if you notice any of these signs.

Other symptoms can include sudden blurred or lost vision, dizziness, loss of balance, confusion, and numbness or weakness on one side of the body.

Our Neuro-Rehab Clinic for Ischaemic Stroke Rehabilitation

Leaving hospital is rarely the end of recovery. For most people, it’s where the real work begins. Our physiotherapists, occupational therapists and rehab specialists help with:

  • Walking, balance and getting up from the floor or a chair
  • Drop foot and catching your foot when you walk
  • Weakness or stiffness on one side of the body
  • Arm and hand movement for everyday tasks
  • Fatigue, stamina and building your fitness back up
  • Confidence, independence and getting back out into the community

Every Ischaemic Stroke management and recovery programme is built around you. One person’s goal might be walking their dog again. Another’s might be returning to work. We plan your stroke rehabilitation around those goals, not a one-size-fits-all routine.

How We Support Your Ischaemic Stroke Recovery

Your brain can rewire itself after a stroke. This is called neuroplasticity, and it’s the reason recovery is possible. But it needs the right input: lots of repetition, the right level of challenge and expert guidance. That’s exactly what our clinic is set up to give you.

Walking and balance

Our Lexo Gait Trainer uses robotics to guide natural walking patterns. This lets you take hundreds of steps in a single session, far more than you could manage unsupported. The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill takes weight off your legs so you can walk safely while you rebuild strength. TYMO and Strolll AR Glasses help with balance and posture.

Drop foot and muscle weakness

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) gently stimulates weak muscles to lift your foot as you walk, helping to reduce trips and falls. FES cycling lets you exercise even when your muscles are very weak.

Arm and hand recovery

Getting your hand working again can make a huge difference to daily life. The AMADEO and PABLO systems give your arm and hand the repetition they need, with exercises built around real tasks like gripping, reaching and dressing.
